2009-present: RebrandingEdit

Who owns New World in New Zealand?

Natalie Zemon Davis, CC (born 8 November 1928) is a Canadian and American historian of the early modern period. She is currently an Adjunct Professor of History and Anthropology and Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto in Canada.
Countdown has nine private label brands - of which all except Signature Range and 'Countdown' branded products are in common with private label brands of Woolworths Supermarkets Australia. Johnsonville and Upper Hutt in the Wellington region both have two Countdown stores less than 150 m (160 yd) apart - the result of one pre-existing Countdown store and one larger rebranded Woolworths store. Both stores stock a similar range of products. The same situation occurs in Napier, where two Countdown stores are directly across the road from each other. The card was previously known as the Foodtown card, but was relaunched with a new name after the merger between Progressive and Woolworths (NZ) Ltd. The card can now be used in Woolworths, Foodtown and Countdown stores. In 2001, Dairy Farm International sold its Woolworths New Zealand Limited business and it merged with Progressive Enterprises, the operator of Foodtown, Countdown, SuperValue and FreshChoice.
Ownership changed hands in 1990 when Hong Kong's Dairy Farm International acquired the Woolworths supermarket chain. Woolworths was expanding and in 1971 acquired the Self Help grocery chain and later rebranded these as Woolworths. In 2011 Countdown put a formal structure in place, partnering with the Salvation Army to launch Countdown Food Rescue.

  • In October 1993, Foodland Associated Limited (FAL) bought the majority shareholding in Progressive Enterprises from Coles Myer and, shortly after, bought all remaining public shares and delisted Progressive Enterprises from the New Zealand stock exchange.
  • The sale saw Progressive Enterprises's supermarket brands Foodtown, Countdown, 3 Guys, SuperValue and FreshChoice joined by Woolworths, Big Fresh and Price Chopper.

This was replaced in 2014 in South Island stores by the Clubcard system; this was phased into North Island stores in 2016. In spite of the change of name, the new Countdown stores would adopt the design and much of the branding of Australian Woolworths stores, including their "W" symbol launched in 2008. In 2000, The Food Safety First (FSF) Programme was introduced in all Woolworths and Big Fresh stores nationally. This programme employed HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point). This programme was created by the Ministry of Health to identify all potential hazards and controls them before they result in food poisoning problems.
